The Seasons

The Seasons was actually done over a 5-year period starting in 2019 and began at the start of Spring when a bluebird flew from the fence in my backyard to the woods in the distance. We experience all four seasons in their extremes where I live and each leaves a mark on the ground, air, and people.

Spring

Acrylic with modeling medium · 48 × 36 in · 2024

When most people hear the word Spring images of warm skies and flowers blooming everywhere come to mind. Not so much in Central NY. For us Spring means frost every morning and walking out the door in a hoodie and high 70's in the afternoon with shorts on, along with the hoodie. It means mud, rain, freezing rain, more mud, and then a little warmth, finally. Our trees are incredibly rugged as each of the first few times they try to bud there's an ice storm, but they bounce back and try again. Spring reflects that.

Summer

Acrylic with modeling medium · 48 × 36 in · 2024

Summer for us means extremes in growth, beauty, activities, and heat. High pressures mean bright blue skies, and you can literally watch the grass grow if you're patient enough. We get as much as we can out of summer as we know it won't last forever.

Autumn

Acrylic with modeling medium · 48 × 36 in · 2024

For many of us in CNY, while it is the shortest of the four, Autumn is our favorite season. The air cools, the sweet corn is at every farm stand on the honor system, the leaves begin their transformation to the reds and golds and browns that make our landscapes some of the most beautiful in the world, and there's football. GO BILLS!

Winter

Acrylic with modeling medium · 48 × 36 in · 2024

Winter in Syracuse is different. Not only is it our longest season by far with snow landing and sitting from November through April, but it is also our most unpredictable. With temperatures that drop to -20's and snow that can surpass 10 feet at any time we plan for the worst. For the most part though things are quiet. People are inside, our world is covered by a thick white blanket, and we wait. It's beautiful, wet and incredibly dry at the same time, and it seems eternal. We wait with Winter until it decides it's done.
