01Artist statement

My paintings are a depiction of emotion, remembrance, reaction, fear, hope, and fun through color, depth, texture, and lightplay — and an understanding that beneath what we see there are many more layers unseen.

Each canvas is built slowly, often across three to seven years, in dozens of layers of paint and modeling medium that are sanded back, buried, and partially recovered. What survives on the surface is the record of everything that came before it. The paintings change with the light in a room and reward the viewer who stays with them past the first glance.

I began in my family's commercial photography studio and darkroom, where an image was made by hand and you learned to wait for it to appear. That patience is the method. Titles arrive last, once the painting has earned one.

02Short bio (for wall text and press)

Tim Morris is a painter based in East Syracuse, New York. Working in acrylic, oil, and mixed media at architectural scale, he builds canvases over three to seven years in dozens of layers that are sanded back and partially recovered. His work — including the four-panel series The Seasons — considers memory, weather, and what remains beneath a surface. This is his first submission for exhibition.

03Materials, process, and care

  • Support: stretched canvas, gallery-wrapped; sides finished and ready to hang unframed.
  • Media: acrylic, oil, modeling medium and mixed media, applied in layers with brush, blade, and scrape; selectively sanded between layers.
  • Duration: three to seven years per painting; often forty to one hundred discrete layers.
  • Finish: matte to satin; surfaces are relief-heavy and shift with raking light — best lit from a single angled source.
  • Care: unglazed and unvarnished where noted; handle by the stretcher, avoid pressure on the raised passages.
